A woman who caused a head-on collision by driving drunk on California State Route 52, resulting in the death of the driver she had a collision with, was sentenced on Tuesday, November 5 to six years in a state prison. Twenty-three-year-old April Carole Thompson admitted her guilt to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
According to District Deputy Attorney Michael Runyon, Thompson was headed west in an eastbound lane of the highway at around 1 a.m. on Dec. 29, 2012 when her Chevrolet truck slammed into 25-year-old Jayme Alan Midlam’s 1970 Volkswagen Beetle. Midlam died instantly.
Thompson told police officers she consumed only one glass of vodka at around 4:30 p.m. the previous day and was driving towards her boyfriend’s residence in El Cajon from her house in National City when the vehicular accident happened.

NBA star Lamar Odom’s lawyer entered a “not guilty” plea on October 9 for a driving under the influence charge filed against him, according to a court spokesperson.
The former Los Angeles Clippers player was arrested in California August of this year and “showed objective signs of intoxication and he was unable to perform his field sobriety tests,” according to a California Highway Patrol news release.
Odom, 33, did not show up at the Van Nuys branch of Los Angeles County Superior Court for his arraignment. The judge set him for a pre-trial hearing on November 8, at 8:30 a.m.

A former Bakersfield California Highway Patrol officer was convicted by a jury of two misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence on Tuesday, September 24.
Edward Marquez was scheduled to work on September 27, 2012. He reported to duty appearing intoxicated and smelling like alcohol, according to the prosecutor. A supervisor noticed and Marquez was given a breath test to confirm. He was found to have an approximate 0.12% alcohol level in his blood.
Marquez was immediately sentenced to two days in jail and 80 hours of community service following his conviction. The jury also suspended his license and placed him on probation.

San Francisco 49ers All Pro linebacker Aldon Smith posted a $5,250 bail late in the morning of September 20 following his arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence and possession of marijuana.
24-year old Smith allegedly hit a tree with his pickup truck before hitting a curb around 7:00 a.m. in San Jose Silver Creek. The police officers who responded to the scene conducted breath tests and took him to the Santa Clara County Jail, where he was determined to be under the influence of alcohol. He was released from custody after he posted bail just a few hours later.
Smith has a previous suspicion of DUI in 2012. He also allegedly fired weapons with former 49ers tight end Delanie Walker during a party in his house that same year. A man named Ronndale Esporlas was shot in the leg and is now filing a lawsuit against Smith.
Smith is due in court on November 4.

Wal-Mart heiress Alice Walton escaped receiving a formal charge for the 2011 DUI violation filed against her after charges were dismissed on Monday, September 9.
Parker County prosecutor John Forest told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that the billionaire’s DUI citation was dropped after the Texas Highway Patrol officer who made the arrest was suspended following an administrative misconduct offense and won’t be able to testify by the specified trial date.
According to senior trooper Gary Rozzell, Walton was pulled over by a Texas Department of Public Safety patrolman after being seen driving 71 mph in a 55 mph construction zone speed limit along Interstate 20 in Parker County at around 10 p.m.
Walton allegedly failed a field sobriety test and was arrested for drunken driving before being taken into custody at the Parker County Jail. Records also show that she refused to take a breath test.

The Roseville police, along with several law enforcement agencies all across California, will be conducting an extensive DUI crackdown program that will run from August 16 until Labor Day, September 2.
Roseville Police visibility will be increased on roads prone to alcohol-related accidents by putting DUI checkpoints in undisclosed locations manned by specially trained officers.

Rapper and actor DMX was arrested and charged with driving under the influence (DUI) by the South Carolina Highway Patrol on Friday, July 26.
South Carolina Highway Patrol media relations head Sgt. Bob Beres said that DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, was seen driving erratically near Greenville, S.C. around 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 25.
The 42-year old rapper was pulled over by police after being suspected of drunk driving. Police records show that Simmons failed a field sobriety test and was taken to the Greenville Detention Center where he was also charged with driving without a license and failure to fasten his seat belt.
Additional information regarding his current arrest status has not yet been released.

A total of 34 arrests were made by the San Diego Police Department at two different DUI checkpoints in San Diego on June 29.
Together with the San Diego County Probation Department, the checkpoints were placed at the 1400 block of G Street in downtown San Diego and the 2400 block of Grand Avenue in Pacific Beach. The DUI checkpoints started operating at around 11 p.m.
Last month, 12 drivers were also arrested at two separate checkpoints in East Village area and Imperial Beach.

Former NBA basketball player Daron “Mookie” Blaylock was put in jail after he surrendered to authorities on June 10 regarding his DWI and other criminal charges.
Blaylock was involved in a fatal car accident in Georgia, in which a 43-year-old woman was killed. He was also charged with driving with a suspended license, improper lane change, and crossing the median that resulted in the fatal head-on crash on May 31.
Reports from authorities said the former member of the New Jersey Nets, who was not allowed to post bail, was also wanted after failing to face a DUI charge.

Hollywood Heights actor Cody Longo, who played the role of a rock star named Eddie Duran, was arrested in Los Angeles for DUI charges early in the morning of June 6.
According to reports, the 25-year-old actor was seen by police flashing lights at other motorists at around 2 a.m. Some witnesses saw the young actor tailgating another car while flashing his high beams. Longo was pulled over by police and given a sobriety test, which he had failed due to having a blood alcohol level much above the legal limit. He was then arrest and later released after posting a $15,000 bail.
Longo also was featured in “Days of Our Lives” and “Piranha 3D.”
