Study shows that interlock devices deter repeat DUI offenders

Posted on March 8th, 2012 No Comments

A study conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that people were less likely to be arrested for an additional DUI if they had an interlock device installed in their car after their first offense.

The study focused on drivers in Washington. The rate of second-time offenders fell by 12 percent when the state required the interlock system to be present in every person’s car convicted of a DUI. The interlock device was only required in the state for repeat drunk drivers before the law was changed.

The results of the study reveal that it is beneficial in the state of Washington to have the interlock systems installed in people’s cars. There are 15 states that participate in these laws regarding interlock device systems for first-time offenders. Lawmakers believe that it is better to have harsher penalties for these individuals so as to avoid fatal accidents.
